Dealing With Workplace Burnout

Posted December 7, 2020

Some jobs, such as first responders, involve obvious stressors; however, even an office job can be stressful enough to cause burnout, especially when outside elements affect your projects. Three symptoms characterize burnout: exhaustion; cynicism about the job, company, and/or coworkers; and feelings of inadequacy in your position. Burnout does not have to cost you your job. It can be managed and reversed with healthy self-care habits like eating well, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep. Taking a vacation may seem like a good option, although returning to the same situation can make the problem worse. Taking breaks for lunch or a walk and getting out of the office (preferably outside) every day can be more beneficial.

The negative effects of burnout spill over into every area of life—including your home, work, and social life. Burnout can also cause long-term changes to your body that make you vulnerable to illnesses like colds and flu. Because of its many consequences, it’s important to deal with burnout right away.  Plains Area Mental Health offers caring, experienced counseling services, medication management and support to help our clients live full, productive lives.
