Perinatal Mental Health Awareness: Support That Lasts All Year Long
Posted June 4, 2025
The month of May, recognized as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, has come to an end—but our commitment to supporting Perinatal Mental Health is ongoing. At Plains Area Mental Health Center, we understand that mental health challenges during and after pregnancy can arise at any time, not just in one designated month.
According to Postpartum Support International, Perinatal Mental Health conditions are the leading complication of childbearing. These conditions may occur during pregnancy, after a miscarriage or loss, or throughout the postpartum period—and they can affect more than just the birthing person. Partners, adoptive parents, and family members may also experience symptoms that impact their emotional well-being.
Understanding Perinatal Mental Health Conditions
Perinatal Mental Health includes a range of conditions such as:
- Postpartum depression (PPD)
- Postpartum anxiety (PPA)
- Postpartum OCD
- Birth trauma/PTSD
- Postpartum psychosis
- Depression or anxiety during pregnancy
These conditions are common, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of. Early recognition of symptoms and timely treatment can make a world of difference.
